Earl Waldegrave coat of arms

London: c 1750. Steel engraving on cream wove paper, 5 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches (sheet) (142 x 162 mm), margins trimmed inside the platemark. Scattered handling wear, creasing and edge nicks, uniform age tone. Condition issues are consistent with age.

The Waldegrave family descends from Sir Richard Waldegrave, Speaker of the House of Commons from 1381 to 1382. His son and namesake, Sir Richard Waldegrave, was a soldier and fought in the Hundred Years' War, and his descendant Sir Edward Waldegrave was a politician and courtier. A prominent Catholic, Sir Edward held office under Queen Mary I, who granted him the Chewton estate in Somerset. However, in a significant reversal of fortune, Waldegrave was imprisoned in the Tower of London after the accession of Queen Elizabeth I, where he died in 1561.

The motto, Caelum non animum, is a portion of the well known phrase, Caelum non animum mutant qui trans mare currunt, "Those who go to sea may change their horizon, but not their soul."
