INSCRIBED with a handwritten quote and dated "London | October 1921." He also wrote following his signature "John Drinkwater who didn't give this book to Hugh Walpole" Bound by Bayntun (Riviere), Bath, England" (stamp on first flyleaf), green calf binding with gilt fillets and rosettes + blind tooling, fillets and rosettes on boards, 5 raised bands, rich gilt decorations in compartments and title on red morocco label; turn-ins decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, a.e.g.; hinges somewhat rubbed, but internally bright and clean, firmly bound.
First edition of the English poet and dramatist's first published book of poems. John Drinkwater (1882 – 1937) known before World War I as one of the Dymock poets. His poetry was included in all five volumes of Georgian Poetry. After World War I, he achieved fame as a playwright and became closely associated with Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
