Jean-Marie-Mathias-Philippe-Auguste, comte de Villiers de l'Isle-Adam (7 November 1838 – 19 August 1889) was a French symbolist writer. This story, is the last and functions as the epilogue of the "Contes Cruels," a collection of 28 stories published in different journals and first collected in a single volume under this title in 1883. His friend Stéphane Mallarmé wrote in a letter to his friend Villiers: "You have put into this work a sum of extraordinary Beauty. Truly the language of a God everywhere! Many of the short stories have a prodigious lyricism that no others will attain: all of them amazing. » [Letter cited in the introduction to the 1983 Gallimard/Folio edition].
