The scarce first edition of George Cruikshank's richly illustrated English translation of this German opera, first performed in Berlin in 1821. The play is a boisterous spoof of the William Tell story, and based on the first romantic German opera "Der Freischütz" (The Marksman) by Carl Maria von Weber with a libretto by Friedrich Kind, based on a story by Johann August Apel, which premiered in Berlin, June 1821. The most desirable of the four versions issued (the others on small paper, large paper, and india proofs), this light-hearted play is illustrated with exuberant, hand-colored etchings by George Cruikshank (1792 – 1878). He was know early in his career for his provocative social caricatures but gradually focused more on illustrations of English life and worked on several of Charles Dickens' novels. The Cuikshank Catalogue Rainsonné [Cohn 36] identifies the author as [Johann August] Apel and the "amateur" draftsman as [Alfred] Crowkill.
