A member of the Union Square group, Isabel Bishop was a contemporary and colleague of other New York-based Associated American Artists luminaries such as Reginald Marsh, Armin Landeck, Raphael Soyer, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. Bound by their masterful use of light and shadow, the Union Square group typifies the moody, menacing and joyful images that were born from the post industrial landscape of pre-WWII Manhattan and its environs. Unlike some of her contemporaries who were drawn in by landscape, Bishop focused her attention on the beauty and complexity of people partaking in their everyday activities; virtually all of her subject matter in printmaking is figural.
