Scattered light surface soiling on the recto and verso, minor toning, and two small strips of non-archival tape at the top right and left sheet corners on the verso. From the folio of the same title containing 25 lithographed plates.
Samuel Prout was born in Plymouth in 1783 to Samuel Prout Senior, a naval outfitter, and Mary Cater, a homemaker; the fourth of fourteen children. Prout grew up in the countryside, and spent his summers as a youth sketching and painting the bucolic valleys, thatched cottages, water mills, and serene rivers in Devon. This ink and wash is likely one of Prout's early works from the years when he was under the tutelage of author, artist and educator Dr. John Bidlake.
