Two books bound into one volume: ix + 69 + 95 sheets, with Greek text on unnumbered left pages, Latin text on right; fine woodcut frames on title pages. Later tan morocco binding with gilt fillets and corner florets on boards, gilt titling and leaf decorations on spine; two rows of gilt scrolling on turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, front hinge slightly worn; staining and offset throughout but pages solid and supple, very small wormholes at corners on 5 leaves in the middle of the volume. In pencil on first flyleaf "First editions of several of the Epistolary writing."

The first volume has the letters of Hippocrates, Democritus (ca. 460-ca. 370 B.C.), Diogenes (d. ca. 323 B.C.), Heraclitus of Ephesus, and Crates of Thebes.
The second volume includes the Greek authors Théano, Apollonios de Tyane, Euripide, and Anacharsis.
In is also of interest that copies of these two works were in Jefferson's personal library: see E.M Sowerby, Catalog of the library of Thomas Jefferson, no 4626 11, [1] p., 12-95 [i.e. 10-95] leaves. Woodcut architectural title border. Usual foxing and light browning.
FIRST EDITIONS of these two Greek anthologies (often found together) with Greek and Latin parallel translations edited and translated by Eilhard Lubin (1565-1621). Lubin was a German Lutheran theologian, philosopher, social critic, classical scholar, linguist, mathematician, cartographer who was influential to the work of Comenius and Leibniz.
