HILAIRE BELLOC (1870 – 1953) was a very prolific French-British writer, whose themes varied vastly and were often tinged by his strong Catholic faith. He was embroiled in many disputes around religion and politics. But he also wrote comic verse for children including the popular "Cautionary Tales for Children" which includes "Jim, who ran away from his nurse, and was eaten by a lion" and "Matilda, who told lies and was burned to death."
