c1880. Etching on cream laid watermarked Finch 1794 paper, 4 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches (109 x 147 mm); sheet 6 1/2 x 9 inches (165 x 229 mm), full margins. Signed and titled in pencil in the lower margin. In excellent condition with minor surfrace soiling. Inking has good burr and allowed all of the fine lines to print clearly.

Legros was a central figure in the 19th-century etching revival known for his "Old Master" style that blended realism with a somber, timeless quality. This particular work is characteristic of his rural landscape, and is often praised for its "Rembrandtesque" handling of the landscape and light.
