Although Théodore Tscharner (1826 – 1906) spent several years in California during the Gold Rush (1850–1853) executing drawings of San Francisco and local indigenous peoples, his mature career centered on the Belgian landscape. Around 1870, he stayed at the Castle of Eijsden along the Meuse river, a period that directly yielded his deeply observed depictions of the Maasland, including this specific view of Jupille.
