Au Bord de la Mer (At the Sea Side)

An exotic hashira-e shaped work, an homage to the heavy influence Japanese printmaking had on the artist.

Au Bord de la Mer (At the Sea Side)

London: 1880. Etching with drypoint on cream laid Van Gelder Zonen paper with the heraldic watermark bearing a Strasbourg lily, shield and crown, 15 x 5 1/2 inches (381 x 140 mm); sheet 18 x 8 3/8 inches (458 x 213 mm), full margins. In excellent condition with some minor uniform toning.

[Wentworth 47].

This moving work features Tissot's muse and lover, Kathleen Newton. The composition is notable for its tall, narrow format, capturing Newton in a quiet, pensive moment as she leans against an open window. While the interior is modeled after the home that Tissot and Newton shared in London’s St. John’s Wood, he incorporated maritime details outside, including a fanciful rendering of Ramsgate Lighthouse and ship masts, to shift the setting to the coast. A Realist masterwork, the print showcases Tissot’s faculty for fine detail and his frequent use of domestic scenes to evoke deeper themes of longing and contemplation.
