Portrait of young man

c1920. Pencil on wove paper, 7 x 5 1/2 inches (178 x 140 mm), the full sheet. Paper is extremely brittle with a sheet tear through the sitter's forehead, and small losses around the perimeter of the sheet, otherwise a lovely portrait.

Josephine Van Ingen was the sister of Hendrik Van Ingen, the head of the Art Department at Vassar College, and Gilbert Van Ingen, a prominent geologist at Princeton. This academic and artistic environment likely influenced her pursuit of both creative work and scholarly research. She maintained strong ties to Rochester, New York, where her family was prominent. Her brother Hendrik’s role at Vassar also connected the family to the Mid-Hudson Valley art scene.
