Amsterdam: c1765. Mixed media transfer print in brownish ink on watermarked NHS Dutch laid paper, 9 5/8 x 13 15/16 inches (245 x 355 mm), the full sheet. In very good condition with a small sketch of a Dutch heraldic shield and sash on the verso.
While print specialists colloquially refer to these works as "lithographs," 18th century prints by Ploos van Amstel are technically "transfer prints." Van Amstel famously invented a secretive technique designed to flawlessly mimic the texture of chalk and watercolor drawings by employing a combination of sophisticated aquatint, mezzotint, crayon-manner etching, and roulette techniques. True lithography was not invented until 1796, and was not widely adopted until the 19th century.
