Resurrection; Plate 17 from The Passion of the Christ.

1597. Engraving on cream laid paper with an anchor topped with a trefoil watermark, 8 x 5 3/8 inches (204 x 137 mm), thread margins. Engraved by Zacharias Dolendo and Jacques de Gheyn II. The watermark would indicate that this is a late 16th, early 17th century impression.

[New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish): 49].

Karel Van Mander and Heinrich Goltzius created two entirely distinct, parallel Passion series in Haarlem during the exact same timeframe (the mid-to-late 1590s), engaging in a friendly artistic rivalry. While Goltzius was engraving his own famous Passion, Van Mander was designing a separate series that was engraved by other masters in their circle. The two projects represent a fascinating snapshot of how the two friends pushed each other technically and stylistically.
