Royal 4to, 320 x 250 mm); 63 pp. Illustrated with lithographic reproductions of 27 drawings by Richard Kennedy, one repeated, together with reproductions of calligraphy by Noor Shafiqi and Faizul Hasan Deobandi. The English translations are accompanied throughout by the Arabic text of each poem. Hand-set in 24-point SB Caslon and printed in black and blue on BFK Rives white wove mould-made paper. Quarter-bound by Weatherby-Woolnough in dark blue buckram with gilt rules and spine titling, dark blue Japanese handmade paper-covered boards printed in black with the frontispiece design repeated on both covers. Endpapers marbled at the Whittington Press. Housed in the original Colorplan Cobalt paper-covered slipcase, corners rubbed and edge a little sunned.

A striking Whittington Press production bringing together Sufi devotional poetry, Arabic calligraphy, and contemporary illustration in a carefully integrated design. The large format and generous use of white space allow the Arabic and English texts to be presented with unusual clarity, while the combination of black and blue inks gives the pages a calm and meditative visual character. Richard Kennedy’s drawings provide a sensitive accompaniment to the mystical themes of the poems without overwhelming the typography or calligraphic elements.

The anthology presents twenty-six Sufi poems in parallel Arabic and English, reflecting the spiritual and lyrical traditions of Islamic devotional literature. The inclusion of original calligraphy alongside the translations emphasizes the visual as well as literary qualities of the texts, making the volume one of the more ambitious multicultural productions undertaken by the Whittington Press during this period.
