Métiers Curieux de Paris

Geneva: Éditions Jeheber, 1953. Robert Doisneau. First Illustrated Edition. 8vo, 7 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (1900 x 132 mm), 302 pp, some uncut. Eight photographs by Robert Doisneau. A charming and evocative survey of the lesser-known and more picturesque trades of the French capital. Albert Fournier offers lively sketches of professions ranging from clock winder, oyster shucker and water taster to organ grinder, viper hunter, and booksellers of the Seine quays. The text is enriched by eight previously unpublished photographs by Robert Doisneau, whose images capture the atmosphere of a vanishing Paris. Together, they provide a vivid record of artisanal life and curious occupations, most of which have since disappeared.
