Shepherd Leading a Lion (Androcles)
Paris: Imprimerie Royale, c1730. Chiaroscuro woodcut from three blocks (olive, brown, tan), and aquatint on buff laid paper with a heart and crescent moon watermark, 12 15/16 x 8 1/16 inches (328 x 205 mm); sheet 14 x 9 1/8 inches (356 x 232 mm) one-inch margins. From a drawing by Baldassarre Tommaso Peruzzi. In very good condition with minor surface soiling and attenuation. Condition is consistent with age. A fine example of this work, which is plate No. 85 from the series Le Cabinet di Monsieur Crozat. Etching by Anne Claude Philippe de Tubières, Comte de Caylus.
