c1930. Ink and wash in gray ink on buff wove paper, 13 1/4 x 15 inches (337 x 382 mm), the full sheet. Signed in pencil in the lower right margin. In good condition with a 2-inch horizontal edge tear which extends into the lower right image area, repaired on the verso with archival paper tape.

Mildred Williams began her art study at the Wicker Art School in Detroit and won a scholarship to the Art Students’ League in New York, where she studied under Robert Henri and Joseph Pennell. She studied and painted in France in 1923-24 and returned to Europe in 1929 for several months of work. Williams maintained a New York studio for more than 15 years. Her work is in the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, the Staten Island Museum, the New York public Library and the Library of Congress. She exhibited for many years in the Michigan Artists Exhibition, and her works were shown in Philadelphia, Chicago, and San Francisco.
