Paris: Cadart, 1868. Etching on watermarked buff laid Arches paper, 5 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches (140 x 235 mm); sheet 8 1/4 x 12 inches (210 x 305 mm), full margins. In good condition with some light toning and several minor spots of light discoloration in the margins. Printed by Delâtre, Paris.

Appian was born in Lyon and changed his name to Adolphe Appian at age fifteen when he attended the École des Beaux-Arts at Lyon, an art school which specialized in training to decorate fabrics for the local silk industry. He studied under Jean-Michel Grobon and Augustin Alexandre Thierrat. Later he opened a studio in Lyon and worked as a graphic designer. He traveled to Paris to finish his studies. He exhibited a painting and a charcoal drawing in the Paris Salon in 1853 and became friends with Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny who greatly influenced his style.
