Japan – Kago, (Travelling Chair)
Yokohama, Japan: c 1880. Hand-tinted albumen print, 7 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches (197 x 256 mm). Captioned and numbered B. 1157 at lower right, light cockling at top right corner. Unmounted, housed in an archival mat with clear mounting corners.

This may be a "shitekago" or basket palanquin because the straw curtain seems to be rolled up. This kind of palanquin was made simply of four bamboo poles and braided bamboo sticks with straw curtain attached. The palanquin bearers had no set uniforms but carried "ikizue" (breath sticks) to regulate breathing.
