Vol. 1.: 14 3/4 x 10 14 inches (375 x 260 mm); (10) 85 pp., and 40 samples of papers, tipped onto sheets of black laid paper; bound by the Fine Bindery in original half green duck egg blue morocco over green Fabriano Roma paper boards.
Vol. 2 (portfolio)16 11/8 x 12 inches (412 x304 mm), containing 25 full sheets of the papers, each discreetly embossed with a number that refers back to the descriptive texts in vol. 1. green cloth and dark green paper covered boards.
This is copy iii of 300 copies printed on Zerkall Mould-made paper and one of only 65 copies half-bound in leather, containing a portfolio of 25 whole sheets of the papers. Bound by the Fine Bindery, July 1999.

In 1986 the Whittington Press acquired from the Oxford University Press a collection of about 20,000 sheets of various hand- and mould-made papers, dating from the turn of the century.
This book describes each of the 50 papers in detail, as well as the mills that made them, including T.H. Saunders, Strathmore, Papeteries de Rives, Barcham Green and Batchelor & Sons, among many others. A unique account of the final flowering of the English (and some European) mills that continued to make hand-made papers until well into the twentieth century. The author is Curator of Graphic Arts at Princeton University, and a noted expert on the history of paper-making.
