Yokohama, Japan: c 1880. Hand-tinted albumen print, 8 1/8 x 10 1/2 inches (205 x 267 mm), numbered 1625 and captioned "Dancing" in negative at lower right; pencil inscription in Japanese on verso. Scattered dust in negative. Unmounted; housed in an archival mat with clear mounting corners.
A beautiful studio composition with a neutral background that brings out the movements of the three apprentice geishas as well as their elaborate kimonos. The training to become a geisha lasts about five years during which they assimilate the traditional knowledge related to the arts, including dance. Then, they become the ambassadors and guarantors of traditional Japanese arts.
