Japan, Tamadare Waterfall Hakone

Yokohama, Japan: c 1900. Hand-tinted albumen print, 7 7/8 x 10 1/4 inches (200 x 260 mm); numbered B 435 and captioned on lower right corner. Unmounted; housed in an archival mat with clear mounting corners.

The much-photographed Tamadare Waterfalls were a frequent destination for both Japanese and foreign tourists and a locale for purifications. Tamadare Falls had abundant water as seen in the photo, but were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and were buried. They were later dug up, but the flow in the photo cannot be seen at present because of the change in the water route.

Condition: Very good.
