738 Tempio del Sole. Israel Silvestre, after.

Tempio del Sole

c 1640. Etching on hand made cream laid paper, 2 7/8 x 6 1/4 inches (72 x158 mm), 1/4 inch margins. In very good condition with minor edge wear. Adhered with adhesive along the left top sheet edge to an oblong archival paper matrix.

This impression is a reverse image copy of the original work from Silvestre's series of 12 etchings entitled Antiche et moderne vedute di Roma, first published around 1640. Subsequent to its initial publication the edition was republished with the image in reverse by Melchoir Kusel in the later part of the 17th century, and by renowned British publisher Thomas Major in the middle part of the 18th century. Given the nature of the paper and the lack of text in the image we believe this to be a 18th century impression, perhaps from the edition published by Thomas.
